Ballet leotard Good to Know ⏱ 6 min read

A leotard is not just a piece of clothing. For a ballerina, it is her work uniform, a tool for the teacher, a mirror of her technique and an expression of her artistic identity. Choosing the right ballet leotard matters far more than it seems at first glance – and in this guide we will explain why.

Why does the leotard matter so much?

When a ballerina walks into the studio in the right leotard, the teacher can see every line of the body: the position of the back in arabesque, the work of the shoulder blades in port de bras, the angle of the hip in battement tendu. A loose, overly wide or overly decorative leotard can hide technical mistakes – which means they will never be corrected.

Beyond its role in teaching, the leotard has a practical job too: it must stay in place through every movement, without slipping, digging in or limiting the range of motion. That is exactly why the fabric is so important.

A leotard is like a picture frame – when it is right, the picture speaks for itself. When it is wrong, it draws attention away from the art.

Fabrics: what lies behind the brand?

The quality of a ballet leotard is determined above all by its fabric. Here is a short glossary of the most important materials:

Bi-flex®
An innovative stretch fabric. Soft, breathable and moisture-wicking. Keeps its shape after hundreds of washes.
Polyamide + elastane
The classic combination. Good stretch and durability. A more affordable price with similar performance.
Cotton + elastane
Softer and gentler on sensitive skin. Suitable for children and beginners. Less durable under intensive training.
Mesh and lace
Decorative elements. Not suitable for everyday classes, but they add character on stage or in photo shoots.
💡 Did you know?

Bi-flex® was created for sports and dancewear. It stretches evenly with every movement without losing its shape or sagging. The leotard keeps its form even after a full season of intensive use.

Types of cut: which one is right for you?

Ballet leotards differ in cut, straps, neckline and back design. Here are the main types:

👗

Classic camisole leotard

The standard at most ballet schools. It leaves the shoulder blades free, allows full freedom of the shoulders and clearly shows the line of the back.

🎽

Leotard with sleeves

Suitable for cooler studios and for students who need a longer warm-up. Short sleeves are a compromise between freedom and warmth.

✨

Open-back leotard

An artistic choice for more advanced dancers. It highlights the beauty of the back and shoulder blades and calls for more confidence and technical control.

🔗

Cross-strap leotard

A modern alternative with more support. Suitable for broader shoulders or for students who prefer a more secure fit.

How to find the right size?

Unlike everyday clothes, a ballet leotard should fit snugly – but without squeezing or restricting. Here is how to find the right size:

SizeBust (cm)Hips (cm)Suitable for
XS76–8084–88Slim figure, narrow silhouette
S80–8488–92Standard small size
M84–8892–96Medium figure
L88–9296–100Fuller figure

* The table is a guide only. Sizes vary by brand – always check the size chart of the specific product.

✅ Practical tip

With thin-strap or deep open-back leotards, make sure the fabric does not slip and does not need constant adjusting during class. If you have to fix it more than once an hour, it is not the right leotard.

Leotard for class vs. leotard for the stage

Most ballet schools have requirements for the colour and style of the leotard worn in class. For children it is usually pink or black. For advanced students it follows the school’s dress code. Stage leotards allow more freedom in design and sometimes include embellishments.

For class: choose dark or neutral colours that do not show sweat. The fabric should be as functional as possible – no adjusting, no slipping, excellent moisture-wicking.

For the stage or an exam: you can go for a bolder design. Designer prints, mesh details, contrasting straps – anything that makes you feel like an artist, not just an athlete.

Leotard care: how to make it last longer

  • Wash by hand or on a delicate cycle at 30°C maximum. Hot washing destroys the elastic fibres and the leotard loses its shape.
  • Never use a tumble dryer. Heat is a death sentence for any fabric with elastane. Leave it to dry flat, without wringing.
  • Do not use fabric softener. It coats the fibres and reduces the stretch and the fabric’s ability to wick moisture.
  • Rinse it straight after class – salt from sweat breaks down the fibres with prolonged contact. A quick rinse in cold water extends the life of the leotard considerably.
  • Store it folded, not hung. On a hanger, the leotard stretches under the weight of its own fabric.
